Roller Derby Skates Basics
Roller derby is hot right now. If you've been thinking of trying your hand at derby skating, here is some basic equipment and information you'll need in order to get started.
First, you'll need roller derby skates. Skates used in roller derbies have four wheels and are called quads. They are in block formation and are the skates people typically envision when you mention roller skating.
Second, you'll need protective gear. This gear includes a helmet, but you also need wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and mouth guards. Although that sounds like a lot, most leagues require the use of all of them, and for good reason. Roller derby players can get injured, so you want to make sure you take the extra precautions you need to stay safe.
Third, you'll want some repair tools. A great tool is the Riot Do All Tool. This has eight functions in one handy little gadget, making adjustment of locknuts simple and fast. This tool is small and fits perfectly in your roller derby bag for quick adjustments as needed. And, because it has eight functions, it takes up less space in your bag than multiple tools. A similar tool is the Reflex Universal Tool. This one comes in various colors to suit your personality and style!
Fourth, you'll want a skate bag to protect your skates and to make transport easy to and from games and practices. The Radar Sling Bag is perfect for over the shoulder support, while the Zuca Wheeled Skate Bag runs along the ground and has extra storage compartments for all your accessories and other items.
Next, you are now outfitted, so you might want to find yourself a league! You can check with your local roller skating rink, or check out http://wftda.com/ or http://derbyroster.com/ to see if they have a roller derby team listed near you.
Sixth, get to know the game. Check out the rules here. Getting to know the rules and lingo will make your game play so much easier and way more fun.
Finally, think of a clever and creative player name. Roller derby players have fun and unique nicknames called derby names or skater names, so spend some time thinking about yours. Once you decide on one, you may verify no one else is using it by referencing a roster, or by searching the web to see if other derby players have already claimed it. If not, have fun!
